Excursion to the Petrified Forest from El Calafate

This excursion is ideal for adventurous people who enjoy outdoor activities and discovering new places. The route from El Calafate to the Petrified Forest is quite scenic with good visibility of the Lago Argentino lake, the Santa Cruz river, as well as the imposing Cordillera de los Andes with its dominating peak, Mount Fitz Roy. Once we reach our destination we begin a three hour hike exploring a 70 million year old forest of petrified giant trees dotted with fossils of the dinosaurs that once lived there. The remains of the fossilized trees measure up to 1,20 meters (3.94 feet) in diameter and 5 meters (16.4 feet) in length. They were preserved thanks to the forest’s fortuitous position inside a great depression that shields it from the shearing winds that would have otherwise ground it down to nothing over the millennia.
