This is a unique cultural and religious tour in Casabindo high in the mountains of Northern Argentina’s Jujuy province. This excursion is so far off the beaten path it is only offered once a year on August 15th.
You will participate in the indigenous celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with the only bullfight in all of Argentina. This event, symbolizes the fight between the Virgin, whose advocates are the spectators, and the Devil, who is played by the bull. The celebration culminates in front of the church of Casabindo where spectators try to grab a ribbon and gold coins hanging from the bull’s horns. Later the horns are offered to the Virgin (the bull is not sacrificed).
This full day excursion (17 hours) departs from San Salvador de Jujuy but can also accommodate you if you are staying in Purmamarca, Tilcara or Humahuaca since they are on the way. Again, this cultural excursion is only available once a year on the 15th of August. The departure time is 5:00 am from San Salvador and the return time is approximately 10:00 pm or later.
English, French, or Italian speaking guides are available at an extra cost.
A light snack consisting of fruit, sandwiches, and juice will be provided during the trip and typical regional food is available at the destination. Due to the high altitude of the destination and the rough roads, we advise you to have a light dinner and a very light breakfast prior to the excursion. We don’t want you to feel sick during the trip.
We recommend staying in or near San Salvador de Jujuy. The hotels we recommend from personal experience are the Howard Johnson in San Salvador de Jujuy, and the Termas de Reyes hotel and spa. Both are reasonably priced and more importantly have very comfortable beds so you can get a good night’s sleep before this long journey.
