Glaciarium is the new glaciological museum in El Calafate, Santa Cruz, Patagonia, Argentina. The so-called ice museum is already open to the public as it was officially inaugurated on 15 February during the Lago Argentino festival in El Calafate. Glaciarium is one of very few glacier museums in the world. The purpose behind Glaciarium is to increase understanding and awareness of the Patagonian glaciers worldwide. To do this, the museum had to be designed in a way that would attract a cross section of the region’s visitors, not just the science minded ones. To that end, the 2,500 square meter building of Glaciarium was designed as a giant sculpture, seamlessly blending with its surrounding environment. Galciarium’s interior sports the latest in display technology such as lighting, special effects, and multimedia programs in order to present scientific content to the average person in a manner that is both enjoyable and interesting. The entrance fee is approximately USD 18.00.
